As Convener Dr.Farhan was assigned to cater Malir Landhi Jail and apart from observing his duties as a Convener he went beyond his scope of work and took upon the mantle of helping those in need at the prison. He deeply observed the prison conditions and studied the prisoners themselves. He observed if given the right opportunity and a direction these prisoners could be rehabilitated back into the society. He sensitized and involved reputable organizations such as the Red Crescent, Rotary International, CPLC, Pakistan Medical Association, Hunar Foundation and the Anti-Narcotic Force. He first established a disease screening setup at the prison and found out that many prisoners were infected with Hepatitis B & C and hence the necessary medical treatment is being provided. Also Blood Transfusion for Thalassemia patients is also being conducted, water filtration plants and RO plants have also been setup under his supervision. He also supplied medical provisions which included much needed lifesaving medicines in millions. Knowing how the weather of Karachi has changed drastically and due to the occurrence of regular heat waves and overcrowding of prisoners in the jail, he provided the much needed setup of Water Coolers in every barrack along with proper ventilation and cooling systems. In order to help prisoners cope up with their sentence at the prison many events are now being organized and since the past year especially in order to enlighten the spirit of Patriotism, all national days were celebrated including the Defense Day, 23rd March Pakistan Resolution Day and the Independence Day. In-depth studies were conducted regarding the abuse of Narcotics and based on the research’s conclusion valuable data was obtained and as well as Narcotics Drugs screening was established as well. In order to further expand the rehabilitation process for the prisoners, Skill Development and Vocational Training programs are being regularly conducted which are catered under the guidance and as well support from the Professional industrialists. This initiatives gives the prisoners an opportunity to not only just reintegrate themselves back as responsible members of the society but as well as become bread earners for their families once they are released from the Prison. Dr.Farhan’s vision was not only limited to the prisoners but he also wanted to help the policemen working at the prison as well, he made sure that the recognition of their services is dully highlighted to the concerned authorities and also in the media. He and his committee members placed their focus on making sure that prisoners and policemen both have the necessary knowledge and awareness regarding Human Rights and its violations. He has often arranged leisure trips and dinners, and the most recent initiative taken was the arrangement of the Iftar which both the policemen and the prisoners attended together.
